St George Orthodox Syrian church Ichilampady

Ichilampady St. George Orthodox Syrian Church was founded in 1953 through the active efforts of families who came from Kerala for agriculture. Under the leadership of the Late Rev. Fr. Thomas Vadakkedath, the Holy Qurbana was first celebrated in a bamboo shed. Later, the Late Rev. Fr. Zachariah, accompanied by the Late Lamented H.G. Pathrose Mar Osthathiose, took charge of the church. Subsequently, the Late Rev. Fr. A. Jacob served as vicar, overseeing other nearby churches and playing a valuable role in constructing a small church building, even under challenging conditions.

Several priests served between the terms of the Late Rev. Fr. Zachariah and the Late Rev. Fr. A. Jacob. Later, the Late Rev. Fr. V. Mathews (Joy Achen) served for 11 years, contributing significantly to the parish’s development by establishing the cross tower and initial electrification.

Rev. V. Mathews Cor-Episcopa (Manikulam Achen) later took over as vicar, serving for 18 years. During his tenure, the church was reconstructed and consecrated by the Late Lamented H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathew II (Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan) alongside the Late Lamented H.B. Thomas Mar Themothios (Didymos Bava) and H.G. Yakob Mar Irenios on February 15th & 16th, 2002. This event marked a major milestone in the history of Ichilampady Church.

Under Achen’s visionary leadership, numerous developments were realized. Achen continues to support the church in various ways. During these periods, several bishops, notably the Late Lamented Zacharias Mar Dionysius, also extended their support. This era in the church’s history was challenging, but the priests’ dedicated service greatly strengthened the parish.

Later,Rev. Fr. V.C. Jose became the vicar, during which H.G. Yakob Mar Irenios declared the parish a “Georgian Pilgrim Centre.” Fr. Jose contributed significantly to the parish’s growth, followed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Malayil as vicar for a brief time. Next, Rev. Fr. Eldho M. Paul took charge and initiated further developments. Currently, Fr. Kuriakose Thomas Pallichira (Fr. Sunil) serves as vicar, with ongoing improvements supported by the commitment of the priests, parish members, and St. George’s devotees.

The main feast of this church is celebrated on May 6th and 7th, drawing over 45,000 attendees. The 55 parish families serve as the true pillars of support for this event.
